We kept our expectations low, because dolphins are wild and might not show up. They did: a pod of about twenty swam under the boat while the guide explained how to slip into the water quietly without chasing them. Respectful, calm and unforgettable. Our kids now want to become marine biologists.

Two reef stops, both stunning. I am a nervous swimmer, so one of the crew swam next to me with a ring until I felt safe on my own. By the second stop I was following a parrotfish around the coral. Thank you for your patience. It made my holiday.

Perfect for my parents, who don't swim: they watched the reef through the glass while we snorkelled for half an hour. The boat was a bit full on the way back, but the crew stayed cheerful and helpful the whole time.

A long road there and back, but worth every hour. Karnak in the morning light, the Valley of the Kings, lunch by the Nile, and a guide who answered all our questions in Russian. The driver was careful and we felt safe the whole way. If you only do one big trip from Hurghada, make it this one.

My first time on a quad, and the instructor gave me a few minutes of practice before we set off. Dust, dunes, a camel ride and sweet Bedouin tea. Loved every minute.

We wanted one lazy day and this was it. White sand, clear shallow water, and the crew had the shade up before we even asked. Snorkelling straight off the beach, a simple grilled lunch, and back at the hotel before sunset. Exactly what we were promised, without the crowds we had feared.
